Business Info

Bakehouse ’38 Restaurant & Guesthouse is a recently renovated historic Bakehouse in the heart of Cowaramup, South West W.A.  Est 1938, the building was town’s original bakery and is fondly known locally as the old Bakehouse. Less than 3 hours drive south of Perth we are ideally situated central to the Margaret River wine region, perfect for a timeless country town experience while only 10 minutes drive from the hustle and bustle of Margaret River township. Be treated to a unique, boutique guesthouse experience in one of our elegantly rustic rooms…

The guest rooms at Bakehouse ’38 were finally completed in April 2017. Thanks to the new owners attention to detail, the results are 3 rooms which are quite unlike any others you would find anywhere. A singer sewing machine stand as a vanity base, old partially burnt doors from the since demolished Reef Hotel in Bunbury as a bedhead, kerosene lamps and old steel wheels as pendant lighting. Each room is unique with every item sourced and used having its very own story, which just adds further charm to the historic building itself. As well as your private ensuite room guests also have access to the front verandah, the northern courtyard and the guest lounge and dining space within our historic building. There is free Wifi throughout and a Smart TV for your enjoyment. There are also tea/coffee making facilities and a bar fridge in your room for your convenience.

Restaurant coming soon. Inside the restaurant space, entered off the Bakehouse laneway, a large wood fired Metters Bakers Oven has lain idle since the 1960’s when the property ceased to operate as a bakery. Perhaps one of the last remaining few of its kind, the Oven is the heart and soul of this entire property and in its day could bake 280 loaves of bread at any given time. The original timber paddle is still in place, once used to place risen dough onto firebricks and remove delicious, warm fresh bread. While the restaurant is not yet open to the public for general dining, we do offer breakfast to our guests as an optional extra. If you would like a delicious breakfast on any morning of your stay, let our resident Chef and co-owner Shannon know in advance and she will whip you up a cooked breakfast that can be selected from our ever changing menu. Breakfast also includes seasonal fruits, cereal, toast with local condiments and tea/ coffee/ hot chocolate.

The Bakehouse is available for functions. We are currently refining ways to cook with the big Metters Oven and preparing to open the restaurant doors. It won’t be too long until the aroma of wood smoke and slow-cooked comfort foods again waft from the red brick chimney and out into the laneway, signalling that the old Bakehouse is truly back in action. In the meantime, please contact us to discuss booking your private function and follow our journey on Facebook!
